VJ Coder Service Support: What to Check Before You Call Them In
Release time:
2026-09-19
Calling service before running the basic checks on a VJ coder costs a shift. How to sort a consumable fault from a hardware one, and what to log.

Summary: Most service calls on a VJ coder end with a technician replacing a filter or reloading a cartridge rather than repairing a board. The gap between those two outcomes is usually decided before anyone picks up the phone, so run these four quick checks first.
A coder that stops at three in the morning gets the phone call. One that prints faintly for two weeks gets a note nobody reads, and that second machine is the one that eventually fails.
The First Question: Consumable or Hardware
Nine out of ten service calls on a VJ coder trace back to a consumable, a setting, or a filter. Not a board, not a pump.
So before booking a call, answer one question: did anything change? A new cartridge fitted yesterday. A different ink batch. A line that ran three shifts.
If nothing changed for months and the machine degraded slowly, suspect a filter nearing its service interval.
Check the Chip Before the Cartridge
When a coder refuses a cartridge it has run before, the chip is the first suspect and the cartridge the second. This trips people up, because the message points at the consumable while the fault is in identification.
Pull the cartridge and check whether the controller reads a volume at all. If it reads zero on stock you know worked last month, the chip is the variable. Shelf stock labelled by firmware version lets a technician match fast.
Viscosity and the Two-Week Fade
The slow fade is the most misdiagnosed fault on a CIJ line. Codes get lighter over a fortnight, operators nudge settings, and by the time the code fails a scan the machine runs outside its parameters.
Three things cause it. Viscosity drift, which the machine usually reports. A blocked nozzle, showing as missing dots. A filter loading up, showing as slowly falling pressure.
What to Have Ready When Service Arrives
A technician with the right parts on the first visit finishes in an hour; one who guesses finishes in three and books a return trip. Have four things ready: the model and serial, the firmware version, the part numbers loaded, and the last three fault messages with dates.
Most plants fall down on that last one. A five-line log taped inside the cabinet door fixes it.
Contracts and the Records That Cut Calls Short
Ask what the response time covers. Clock hours or business hours. Parts included or labor only. A contract quoting eight hours starting at nine the next morning is twenty hours in practice.
Keep the fault log, keep a chip from each batch with the date on the bag, and keep consumable part numbers on one sheet. Three cheap habits that get the right part on site.
