Loogal never tried to be the biggest name in industrial coding. That is exactly why the installed base is awkward to supply. Their units went into glass plants, small bottling lines, wire and cable shops and packaging halls - wherever a coder had to be cheap to run and easy to live with. Plenty of those machines are still working. Plenty of their supply arrangements quietly stopped making sense years ago.
If you buy consumables for a mixed fleet, a Loogal unit is usually the one nobody has a formal arrangement for. This guide is about fixing that without overpaying for it.
Why the Supply Side Fell Behind
The machines were sold through regional distributors, many of them small. Those distributors aged out, consolidated, or simply stopped stocking coded cartridges because the volume did not justify the shelf space. Meanwhile the coder on the line kept printing, and kept needing chips.
What replaces a distributor is usually whoever answers the phone. That is how plants end up with chips from four different sources, none of them documented, and no way to tell which bag caused last quarter's rejects.
None of this is a reason to replace the machine. It is a reason to buy chips the way you buy any other critical consumable: with a specification, a test, and a record.
What the Compatible Chip Has to Match
Three things. The identification data the controller expects to read. The timing and format in which that data arrives. And the firmware generation running on the specific board that reads it.
The third item is where most sourcing arguments start. Coders carrying the same model badge were built across a long span, and controller boards changed underneath them. A chip validated against an early board is not automatically the chip for a unit assembled five years later.
So the useful question is not whether a supplier says compatible. It is which firmware range a specific production batch was tested against, and on what date. A supplier who answers that in one paragraph has already saved you a bench session.
Reading a Quote That Names Revisions
A quote you can actually buy from names the cartridge family, the chip revision, the firmware range and the test date. Anything shorter is an opening position, not a price.
Watch for one part number quietly covering two revisions. It usually happens when an old reel never got written off. It shows up later as two or three rejects per hundred that nobody can trace, and it costs far more than the difference you thought you saved.
Unit price also flatters itself. What you actually pay is cost per chip in place: freight, bench rejects, a wrong-revision delivery, and the hour a technician spends working out which of those three stopped the line. Put that on your comparison sheet. A supplier ten percent cheaper with a five percent reject rate is not cheaper.
MOQ and the Mixed Carton
Minimum order quantities on coding chips are set by the bag, which suits the supplier and quietly punishes any plant running a wide spread of hardware. There is always one cartridge family that barely moves, and it is always the one that stops a line.
Push for a mixed carton. It is the single concession that decides whether a spares shelf earns its space or ties up cash for a year. When a supplier refuses, ask what mixing actually costs them. Sometimes the answer is genuine logistics. Often it is habit.
Storing and Testing the First Bag
Chips are not ink. They do not expire on a date printed on the bag, which is precisely why they cause problems. A reel can sit on a shelf for three years, survive two firmware updates on the machine it was bought for, and then get fitted because it was at the front.
Two habits fix this. Write the firmware version on the bag when it arrives, not the model number. And rotate against the machine the bag was bought for, because a chip that is perfectly good on one unit can be scrap on another sitting two metres away.
Then test on the machine that will actually run the chips, not the one nearest the door. Run a full shift rather than a single print, because the failures worth catching surface after an hour of constant use, not in the first ten minutes. Keep one chip from every batch in a labelled bag with the date on it. A year later that bag answers questions no email thread will, and it costs nothing.
Single-Brand and Mixed Fleets Are Different Problems
If you run one Loogal unit and nothing else, buy simple: one supplier, one revision, one bag size, reordered on consumption. The risk you carry is a single point of failure, so keep a spare bag that nobody is allowed to raid for a different machine.
A mixed fleet is harder. Chips for a Loogal, a larger platform coder and a handheld have to be visually distinguishable on a dark shelf at three in the morning, or the wrong one gets fitted and blamed on the supplier. Colour-coded bags plus a firmware note solve most of that for free.
Spares Levels for Machines That Cannot Stop
Most plants hold two to four weeks of chips and nothing beyond it. That is reasonable for a handheld marking occasional cartons. It is thin for the coder feeding batch and date data into a line that cannot stop.
Decide the level per machine, not per plant. The unit printing traceability codes gets a labelled spare bag on the shelf against the firmware version it was ordered for. Everything else can wait a day.
Three Questions Before Every Reorder
Which firmware range, tested on which date? What happens to the bag label when a revision changes mid-run? And who do you call at two in the morning when a new bag will not read? Ask those three before price, and the sourcing conversation gets shorter every year.
