Pharma packaging lines demand more from coding ink than most plants assume: adhesion on blister foil, batch traceability, solvent behaviour and chip control.

Ink for pharmaceutical packaging is not simply a darker version of the ink running on a beverage line. The substrate changes first, and then everything else follows from it.
Blister Foil and Carton Board Are Different Problems
Aluminium foil is smooth, non-porous and unforgiving. Ink sits on the surface rather than soaking in, so adhesion becomes the whole game. Carton board behaves the opposite way: it drinks solvent, dries fast, and shows every variation in coating weight.
A plant running both needs either two ink specifications or one that has been tested hard on both. The second option exists, but it is worth asking who tested it and on which foil grade.
Traceability Raises the Stakes on Legibility
Pharma codes carry batch and expiry data that has to stay readable through handling, and often through a serialisation step downstream. A code that smears under a scanner is not a print quality issue, it is a batch record problem.
Legibility requirements push you toward tighter contrast, which in turn pushes solvent balance and nozzle condition. Small changes matter more here than on a carton line.
Solvent Behaviour in Clean Rooms
Clean room conditions restrict ventilation, which changes how quickly solvent flashes off around the print head. Ink formulated for an open packaging hall may run differently behind a restricted air change rate.
Ask a supplier what they know about this environment. It is a reasonable test of whether they have actually served pharma plants or only printed their brochure.
Chip Control on a Regulated Line
On a regulated line, an unrecognised cartridge is not an inconvenience, it is a documentation event. A compatible chip has to present identification the controller accepts without argument, and the plant needs a record of which batch went into which machine.
Keep it simple. Label each batch, hold one chip back as a reference, and treat the ink and the chip as one consumable pair rather than two separate purchases.
What to Ask Before Switching Ink
Ask for adhesion data on your own substrate, not on a generic sample. Ask how the ink behaves at the low end of your room temperature range. Ask what happens to the batch record if a code has to be reprinted.
Then run a full shift before committing a line. Pharma packaging does not reward optimism, and the cost of an ink that almost works shows up in rejected cartons rather than in the invoice.
