Why the Printer Refuses Non-Original Ink
CIJ and TIJ platforms do not taste the ink. They read the chip. That small contact block carries the cartridge identity, the fluid type and a level counter, and the printer trusts it completely. If the chip reports an unknown or spent cartridge, the machine refuses it — regardless of what is actually inside.
The Chip Is the Usual Suspect
Refilled cartridges often carry a chip that has already counted itself down to empty, or one whose data does not match the new fill. The printer sees a contradiction and locks it out. Poor contact makes it worse: oxidized pads, bent pins and static damage all present the same way from the operator's side — a cartridge the machine simply will not accept.
Diagnose It in Ten Minutes
Clean the chip contacts with isopropyl alcohol and refit. Try the cartridge in a second printer — if it is accepted there, suspect the first machine's reader head. Check the error code against the manual; some faults point to firmware rather than the cartridge. If two machines reject the same cartridge, the chip is the fault. That one test saves an hour of guessing.
When the Fix Is a Chip Swap
Once the original chip is the confirmed fault, the practical fix is a compatible replacement that resets the cartridge identity — for lines running VJ or DM platforms, a compatible chip matched to the exact model restores recognition without touching the fluid. Fit it, run a test print, and confirm the level reading tracks actual usage.
