Nobody switches ink for fun. A plant switches because the original litre price went up twice in a year and the alternative sits at sixty percent of it. The chips follow months later, and that gap is where the trouble starts.
Why the Coder Refuses the Cartridge
A refusal is rarely about the chip alone. The controller reads identification data from the chip, compares it against what the firmware expects, and checks what the ink circuit reports. Viscosity out of range, air in the line, a filter overdue — any of those produce an error that names the cartridge.
So ask whether the same cartridge would have been accepted last month with the original ink. If nobody can answer, the fault is undiagnosed.
What the Error Message Actually Reports
Read it literally. Most CIJ platforms on VJ or DM hardware report the check that failed, not the part that is wrong. "Ink type mismatch" and "chip not recognised" are different faults that get treated as one.
Write the code down, note the machine hours, and repeat the attempt once. A fault on the second or third cartridge is a batch or contact problem. A fault on every cartridge is configuration or firmware, and a different chip will not fix it.
Ink and Chip Are One System
Alternative ink and compatible chips get sold by different people, and each side tests its own product against a working machine. Neither tests the pair, in your climate, at your line speed.
That is the gap worth closing before volume. Buy ink and chips from the same counter, and ask for both batch records. When the ink batch changes, treat chip behaviour as unproven until you have run it.
Testing Before You Commit the Line
One machine, one shift, one batch. Keep the rest of the line on the old ink while the trial runs, so a failure costs an hour instead of a shift.
Log the start time, the ambient temperature and the print head condition. Ink that behaves on a warm afternoon can thicken overnight in an unheated hall, and the failure shows at first start-up.
When to Go Back to Original
If two batches from two suppliers both fail on a machine that accepts original cartridges, the saving is not real. Rejects, downtime and technician hours eat the difference faster than the invoices suggest.
Going back is not a defeat. Plenty of plants run alternative ink on older coders and original on the units printing traceability data for regulated customers. Matching the consumable to the consequence is the skill.
