Spec sheets for an industrial coding machine are written to be compared, not to be run. Two vendors print the same headline numbers and the difference shows up six months into production, on a Tuesday, when a line stops for something nobody listed.
What the Spec Sheet Leaves Out
Speed, resolution, font count, interface list. All of it useful, none of it decisive. Nothing on the page tells you how long the machine takes to start after a wash-down, how much ink a stop-start shift actually wastes, or whether a technician can reach the print head without dismantling a guard.
Print Window and Line Speed
Line speed on paper describes your belt. The print window describes the machine. What matters is the combination: at your belt speed, how many characters fit, and how much of that window the machine needs for a clean dot. Ask for the relationship between the two, not the maximum either one reaches alone.
Consumables Decide the Running Cost
Ink, solvent, and the chip that identifies them. On a machine with locked consumables those three become a subscription for as long as the machine runs. Buyers increasingly cost the consumable schedule over three years before they cost the unit, because the unit is the smaller number.
This is also where a compatible chip programme earns its place. On a coding and marking setup running several heads, chips and fluids are the recurring line in the budget, and they are the line that can be planned.
Service Access and Downtime
Ask two questions. How long does a nozzle clean take without pulling the head. And how many parts have to come out to change a pump tube. The answers decide whether your own technicians keep the line moving between service visits, or whether every minor fault waits for a call-out.
What to Ask Before Signing
Three numbers, in writing. Consumable consumption in litres per shift at your speed. Spare part lead time on wear items. And whether the supplier documents which certifications the machine carries, which matters more and more in regulated food and pharma lines.
Compare two machines on those three numbers and the shortlist gets shorter fast. Most of what looks like a technical decision turns out to be a service and consumable decision wearing a data sheet.
