Complaints about non-original ink arrive the same way every time. The coder ran for weeks, then stopped mid-shift with a message pointing at the cartridge. The fluid is usually fine. The chip is usually the argument.
Why the Coder Refuses Non-Original Ink
The controller does not analyse the fluid. It reads what the cartridge tag claims: ink family, volume, batch, sometimes a date window. When those fields do not match the table the firmware carries, the coder refuses to run. That is a data refusal, not a chemistry one.
Operators in Spain and Latin America describe it as the codificadora not recognising the ink. Recognise is the right verb. The machine never tasted anything.
What the Chip Actually Reports
Ink family, nominal volume, batch identity, and on some models a use-by window. Every one of those fields has to satisfy the firmware version installed on that specific machine. A chip built against an earlier table can pass on one coder and fail on the identical model standing next to it, which is why two lines in the same hall sometimes behave differently on the same cartridge.
Three Faults That Get Blamed on Bad Ink
A batch the controller has already seen. A date sitting ahead of the machine clock. And a contact pad that reads clean on the bench and misses intermittently once the machine starts vibrating. None of the three changes how the fluid performs. All three get written off as bad ink.
Before ordering another barrel, log the message word for word. The wording separates a rejection from a genuine print quality complaint more often than not.
Matching Ink Family to Chip
Colour matters less than family. A solvent-based fluid and a water-based one will not share a chip table even in the same colour, and a supplier who lists families instead of colours is the supplier worth keeping. Ask which families were validated, and ask for the firmware range at the same time.
What to Check Before Blaming the Ink
Four steps, in order. Confirm the firmware version on the machine. Confirm the chip was validated against that version. Run one cartridge through a full shift and record every message the panel shows. Then compare landed cost per litre including the chip, because a cheap fluid paired with an unreliable chip is expensive at the line, not at the invoice.
