غالبًا ما تعيش أجهزة الترميز DM أطول من ملفاتها. يركّب المصنع خطًا، ويضيع ملف الصيانة بين مسؤولَي صيانة، وبعد خمس سنوات تكون الحقيقة الوحيدة المؤكدة أن الجهاز ما زال يطبع أربعين ألف رمز في الوردية، وأن الرقاقة داخل الخرطوشة يجب أن تُقرأ بشكل صحيح في كل مرة. البحث عن رقاقة متوافقة لهذا الجهاز لم يعد عملية شراء، بل عملية تحديد هوية.

معظم المشترين يدركون ذلك بعد شحنة خاطئة واحدة، لا قبلها.

لماذا يكون أسطول DM أصعب في التوريد مما يبدو

جهازان يحملان لوحة الاسم ذاتها قد يفصل بينهما أربع أو خمس سنوات في سنة الصنع. وفي منتصف تلك الفترة تغيّر لوح التحكم، والرقاقة التي ترضي جهازًا لا ترضي بالضرورة الجهاز المجاور له.

الموزعون يتعلمون ذلك بالطريقة المكلفة: بكرة واحدة تنتشر في منطقة كاملة، وخلال شهر يبلّغ ثلاثة عملاء عن العطل نفسه. جدول إصدارات يحل معظم ذلك. صفحة واحدة تربط إصدار الرقاقة بجيل البرنامج الثابت، وتُحدَّث كلما ظهر تغيير في اللوح ميدانيًا.

الأمران الأولان سهل الحديث عنهما، والجميع يتحدث عنهما. الثالث هو نقطة انهيار عروض الأسعار. الرقاقة المصنوعة لجيل قديم تطبع بسلاسة أسبوعًا كاملًا، ثم يبدأ المتحكم في رفض الخراطيش، وعندها تكون الدفعة في يد ثلاثة عملاء.

لذلك شغّل الكيس الأول على الجهاز الذي سيستهلك الدفعة فعلًا، لمدة وردية كاملة، واحفظ رقاقة واحدة من كل دفعة في كيس مكتوب عليه التاريخ. بعد سنة سيجيب ذلك الكيس عن أسئلة لا يجيب عنها أي سلسلة بريد إلكتروني.

عمر البكرة وأسطورة الصلاحية

الرقائق ليست حبرًا. لا تنتهي صلاحيتها في التاريخ المطبوع على الكيس، وهذا بالتحديد سبب المشكلات. قد تبقى البكرة ثلاث سنوات على الرف، وتنجو من تحديثين للبرنامج الثابت على الجهاز الذي اشتُريت له، ثم تُركَّب لأنها كانت في المقدمة.

عادتان تحلان معظم ذلك. اكتب إصدار البرنامج الثابت على الكيس عند وصول المخزون، لا رقم الموديل. وبدّل الكيس حسب الجهاز الذي اشتُري له، لأن رقاقة ممتازة على جهاز قد تكون خردة على جهاز آخر يبعد مترين.

نسبة التركيب الصحيح من أول مرة. والمرتجعات لكل مئة كيس مشحون. والوقت الذي يستغرقه مورّدك للإجابة على الهاتف في الحادية عشرة ليلًا.
